Both paths open at the same level and both keep your base kit, so the choice is narrower than it looks — and one widely repeated requirement turns out to be less settled than the guides suggest.
What the choice actually changes
Your fighting style — Soryu, Tai Chi or Reaper — is yours either way. It is the layer above that splits:
| Slayer | Demon | |
|---|---|---|
| Progression layer | One of 8 breathing styles | One of 9 Blood Demon Arts |
| How you get it | Trainer quest chain at level 25 | Muzan’s transformation quest |
| Main cost | Demon Horns or Beast Cores plus Wen | Reputation work, then a roll you do not control |
| Extra gate | Final Selection for later quests | Sunlight, handled with clan or gear |
Every breathing style is a fixed kit — you know what you are buying. Every Blood Demon Art is a roll, and rolls can fail.
The gates everyone actually hits
Level 25 opens both paths. For Slayers that means every breathing trainer becomes available; for Demons it means Muzan will deal with you. The bottleneck on the Slayer side is materials — see the materials guide for Demon Horn and Beast Core farming.
Slayers carry one extra structural gate: several later Slayer quests will not unlock until you have cleared Final Selection, a timed instance. That is real content you have to do, not a formality — the Final Selection guide covers the run.
How the Demon transformation works
- Find Muzan. He spawns in villages. The two most-cited spawns are both walking distance from the starter village — one up the hill, one down the hill through the gate.
- Talk to him and take his quest. He hands you a bell.
- Use the bell to enter his area, then choose your dialogue:
- “Give me your power” rolls a Blood Demon Art — 70% chance of a random art, 30% chance of nothing.
- “Give me a task” starts his kill quests, which is the Demon side’s repeatable XP.
- Rerolls cost ores, so a bad roll is a farming problem rather than a dead character.
That 30% failure rate is the single biggest difference between the paths: a Slayer picks a style and pays materials, a Demon pays and then gambles.
The reputation gate — what is actually confirmed
This is where the guides disagree, so read it carefully.
Reputation is definitely an input: killing Demon-side NPCs (the Mistenoto) drops your reputation, and at a low enough value Muzan’s dialogue changes and he engages. Our become-a-demon guide documents a −40 threshold tested on camera at launch, and explicitly rejects the −50 figure that circulated on launch day.
Post-launch reports complicate that. Players in the official Discord questions channel have reported accounts far past −40 — one cited −5,500 — still being refused by Muzan, with community answers pointing to a different blocker: needing the Slayer side completed first, then resetting your race. The developers have not published the rule.
What we can say: reputation gets you the conversation, but it may not be sufficient on its own, and any single number circulating right now — including −40 — should be treated as unverified until it is re-tested post-launch.
Switching back
Community answers say you can return to the Slayer side after completing Final Selection by resetting your race; Demons report needing a reset to take a breathing style back. None of that is developer-documented, so plan on the choice being expensive to reverse rather than free.
So which is better?
- Pick Slayer if you want the cheapest, most predictable progression: one material farm (Demon Horns), a fixed kit, and no roll to fail. It is also the path every leveling route is written around.
- Pick Demon if you want the higher ceiling. Blood Demon Art builds farm the endgame dungeon noticeably better than the alternative, and Demons get permanent night vision. Budget for the 30% failed roll and for the fact that some arts want a specific weapon before they come online.
- If you are undecided, start Slayer. You can progress to the point where the Demon route is cheap to attempt, and the Slayer early game is the better-documented road — the leveling guide assumes it.
FAQ
Can you switch from Slayer to Demon later?
Yes — Muzan will take you whenever you meet his requirements, and nothing about the Slayer side locks you out. Community answers say the reverse trip needs a race reset after completing Final Selection, so treat the switch as cheap one way and expensive the other.
Do you lose your breathing when you become a Demon?
The paths are exclusive: breathing trainer chains are the Slayer side’s kit and Blood Demon Arts are the Demon side’s. Plan on committing one way per run.
What reputation do you need for Muzan to talk to you?
The camera-tested answer is −40, but that is now contested by post-launch reports of far lower reputations still being refused — see the reputation section above. We are not printing a definitive number until it is re-tested.
Sourcing
Level gates, the Muzan spawn pattern, the bell and the 70/30 roll split are from launch-week creator walkthroughs (2026-09-20). The −40 reputation threshold is camera-tested content already on this wiki; the contradicting reports come from the official Discord questions channel and are labelled as player reports. The dungeon build note is from a creator dungeon run.
